GETTING PERSONAL WITH CHRISTY CULP
Sunday, April 13, 1:00 - 4:00 PM
Service Description
Getting Personal: Making pots that create a personal style using Imagery and Surface Design Ever wonder how artists decide to decorate their pieces? Or where the inspiration comes from? In this workshop Christy will talk about her imagery, its connection to her life and how it has changed over time. She’ll demonstrate how she works with her signature red clay and slip, underglazes and sgrafitto tools. Christy will share how she lays out designs and transfers images to the clay surface. Participants will have the opportunity to sample the techniques and consider how they might use decoration in their own work. About Christy: Christy Culp started working in clay at Indiana University of Pennsylvania when studying for her teaching degree in 1991. When not teaching high school art, she can be found in her barn studio which was featured in Ceramics Monthly “Studio Visit” in the fall of 2023. She has given workshops, lectures and curated cup shows in Western Pennsylvania and nationally for the K-12 Programming at the National Council for the Education of the Ceramics Arts. She has been featured on several pottery podcasts, including Ben Carter’s “Tales of a Red Clay Rambler. Most recently, Christy’s work was featured in “The Complete Guide to Low Fire Ceramics.” Her work is included in The Rosenfield Collection and can be found at Charlie Cummings Gallery.
